Decker's family relocated to Louisiana when she was 9. Decker then won a regional talent contest with a rendition "I I'd like to be a Cowboy's Sweetheart" from Patsy Montana. Decker was able to move to Georgia around the age of fifteen. She began writing songs and making frequent trips to Nashville in search of an agreement with a record label. Songs were offered to record labels and other artists by an agent from Big Yellow Dog Records agent when she was 17. Decker was 17 when she caught the ear of a representative of Big Yellow Dog Records. They began shopping her songs to artists and labels. The first self-titled album under the name Jessie James arrived in August 2009. Jessie James was reasonably successful and also featured Wanted a single that brushed in the Top 40 of the singles charts. Decker, who had considered herself to be a traditional country artist in the past was shocked to discover that the album was not marketed and produced with a focus at a mass audience. Decker, who had been unhappy with two more singles released from the album against the management of the label to get better control. Decker then released her second single Boys in the Summer which is more than a country track. The second album of Decker's was announced with the title Daughter of a Gypsy, or Sweet American Dreams. Mercury had it shelved and three of her country tracks failed. The album was later canceled.
